LOCATIONS
The
courses are held either at The Modern Sewing Centre (MSC)
in Worcester, or at Sytchampton Community Hall (Sytch).
There is an iron, ironing board, cutting mat, ruler, cutter and plenty of tea
and coffee provided at both venues.
Modern
Sewing Centre is located opposite
the Cathedral in the centre of Worcester.

Sytchampton Community
Hall is on the east side of the A449
at the end of Cow Lane between Kidderminster and Worcester and north of the turn
off for Ombersley. Sytchampton is signed to the west side of the
A449 but that's just a sneaky plot to make all these ladies armed with their
sewing machines drive around the countryside all day!
The parking is free at Sytchampton, but
there are no shops in sight, so you will have to bring everything you think you

ABOUT
THE COURSES
QUILT AS YOU GO
at MSC
This is a continuing course divided into four sets of 5 classes. In each of the
half day classes you’ll make a square, or block, for your own sampler quilt.
The idea is to complete twenty blocks, but it’s very flexible! The fun is
learning lots of techniques, including English Patchwork, American Pieced
Patchwork, Strip Piecing, Foundation Piecing, Quick Triangles and more. Tumbling
Blocks, Maple Leaf, Trip Around the World and Drunkard’s Path are just a few
of the designs included.
New
students may join at the beginning of any of the sets of classes. The classes
are each two and a half hours long and meet either on a Tuesday morning, Tuesday
afternoon or Thursday morning about every other week.
Please contact me if you think you might be
interested and I will give you the exact dates and more details.
Course
fee: £62.50 per set of 5 classes.
THE HEIRLOOM QUILT
at Sytch
This course will really show you
how to use your machine to its full potential as the quilt includes as many
different machine sewing techniques as possible. To complete the entire quilt is
a long term project, but you will learn how to do
shadow appliqué, wing needle hemstitching, chain stitching, lace
shaping, corded pin tucks, cutwork, decorative cording, machine lace making,
trapunto, smocking, circular sewing, bias appliqué, puffing, fagotting,
quilting, candle wicking and a few more!
At the moment there are two full classes meeting
one day each month. I am planning to start a third group in March, so if you are
interested or would like more information then please let me know.

DO YOUR OWN THING
at Sytch
I began this class for those who were at the ‘putting together’ stage of the
QUILT AS YOU GO course. It has now developed into a finishing off day for any of
my courses. We usually meet on the second Monday in the month from 10am – 4pm.
Although there is no formal booking for a session,
please let me know if you plan to attend as there are a limited number of
places.

SHADOW APPLIQUÉ

any size. On the front is a unique shadow appliqué design. This would make a

DRUNKARD’S PATH QUILLOW

Back by
popular demand! This is an easy lap size quilt that folds into a pillow when not
in use. It is ideal for the car, children’s sleepovers, students and for
snuggling under on cold winter nights.

WOVEN ORIGAMI BAG

First you’ll weave the four different fabrics, quilt them using decorative
stitches on your machine and then embellish the piece with cords and braids.
Next you’ll sew and fold the square into a small shoulder bag with four
pockets.

STAINED GLASS LAMPSHADE

This is a unique design for a Tiffany style lampshade and quite different from
the other courses. All materials will be provided except for the lamp stand.

PINTUCKED APPLIQUE BAG

Another popular course, this is a versatile, lightweight bag which is very easy
to make. Choose your own appliqué design which is sewn with or without an
embroidery machine. There are pockets on the front and inside the bag, two
shoulder straps and crosshatched pin tucking. The material in the kit is calico,
but you may bring your own if you prefer.

SMOCKED CHRISTMAS BAUBLES

Make this lovely Christmas decoration in red, gold, green or white. You will
learn to do machine smocking and maybe have time to make more than one – what
an unusual gift!

FABRIC PYRAMIDS

They’re actually tetrahedrons, but I thought that might put you off! You will
make one to hang on the tree and one a little larger to use as a gift bag. Both
have a sneaky way of inserting a zip and each will be embellished in a different
way. How can you resist!

HOBBY HORSE
ORNAMENT

Decorate your home at Christmas with these little horses. Use fabric scraps and
braids and bring along any empty cotton reels (Sylko size) as they are used for
the feet.

ribbon weaving, foundation piecing, fabric folding, shadow appliqué, candle

DRESSMAKING TIPS AND TECHIQUES

The course is suitable for the beginner or experienced sewer. Techniques will
include setting in sleeves, sewing balanced darts, a one thread dart for sheers,
concealed , centred and lapped zips and
hems. There’s sure to be a few more tips along the way!

NINE PATCH
PILLOW

Get to grips with your machine and make this pretty pillow. You will learn to do
circular sewing, add decorative stitches using the programming facility on your
machine if you have one, using a wing needle, twin needle and the triple stitch
or hand look quilting stitch. Most machines will be suitable for the course,
even a basic one with a few decorative stitches will suffice.

BIAS APPLIQUE QUILLOW

Quillows are so useful, so why not make this one and learn how to do bias
appliqué with perfect curves and mitres.

MACHINE QUILTING at

This two and a half day course will guide you through the basics of machine
quilting techniques. You will be using different types of wadding, various
marking tools and quilting accessories. We will start with the basics and
advance to free motion feather design, stippling and echo quilting. You will
make three sample pieces, each bound in a different way.

BOXER SHORTS

Keep the man in your life happy with these snazzy boxer shorts! You will be
shown how to sew perfect felled seams (not the way you learnt in school), how to
make a fly opening and to sew a professional looking elastic waistband. A metre
of fabric, elastic and thread is all it takes. Take the pattern with you and
make more at home!

MANIPULATED INSET BAG

One day I’ll come up with a better title! It’s a shoulder bag with a zip and
an inset on the front made by manipulating the fabric to reveal tiny windows.
